Before concentrating on yacht racing, Jens Salvesen was active in various sports. As a skier, he was second in class B at the 1905 Holmenkollen. He also played football for Spring and later for the Academic Football Club and Tennis for the Oslo Tennis Club. In 1905 Salvesen started a shipping business, spending 11 years in Germany, England and Russia. In 1916, he became the sole operator of Salvesens Rederi.
