Flavio Scala

Flavio Scala was a helmsman in Italian sailing. At 13 his mother bought him an old Star boat on which, first with his brother and then with Mauro Testa, he took part in all the regattas on Lake Garda.

In 1965 Scala obtained a new American-made Star, which greatly improved his results, especially at the classic regattas of Genova, Trieste and those on Lake Como and Lake Lecco. The Scala / Testa crew won the qualifications at Argentario and in Sardinia, against Gigi Croce, and were chosen for the 1972 München / Kiel Olympics where they won the last regatta and placed fifth. At the 1980 World Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Scala / Testa started slowly but then had two firsts, a third, and a fifth place to finish fourth overall.

Scala twice competed at the America’s Cup, aboard Azzurra in 1983, and in 1987 aboard Italia. After his America’s Cup experience, he opened Casa Italia in 1987, a restaurant in Australia along with Maurizio Gucci.
