Australian-born Colin Smith learned to sail and build boats in his native country and was the 1968 South Australian champion in the Flying Dutchman class. He then moved to Hong Kong and represented that country at the 1972 Munich Olympics where, with fellow Australian Bill Steele, he finished 24th out of 29 nations in the Flying Dutchman tournament. He returned to Australia in the early 1980s, became certified as a coach, and registered numerous international successes across various disciplines, including a World Championship title for Chris Tillett and the non-Olympian Mike Rogers in the Fireball class in 1982. He was also the coach for the Australian Finn and 470 class entries at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics.
Smith then became the coach of the Hong Kong national team in 1992, and was the head of their sailing delegation to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, which included his wife Cheung Mei Han. He continued coaching with the national team through 2016. By career, he was a communications technician.
