Born in Australia in 1940, Bill Steele went on to become a successful pilot and sailor, representing Hong Kong at the Olympics in the latter. Steele first flew for the Royal Australian Air Force before joining the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Western Australia. This was followed by a stint of flying a DC-3 from Australia to Papua New Guinea before joining Cathay Pacific, where he flew 747s on trans-Pacific flights.
On the water Steele sailed in the Etchells class, being a member of the Royal Perth Yacht Club. In 1972 he competed at the München Olympics, where he and fellow Australian sailor Colin Smith represented Hong Kong in the Flying Dutchman class. Their best result came in the seventh and final race, finishing 10th, but a poor start saw them place 24th overall. Steele later served as the International Governor of the Etchells class from 2005 to 2010, before being appointed as the chair of the International Governing Committee in 2009.
