James Spence was one of the 10 crew members aboard Sir Charles McIver’s Mouchette, which won the silver medal in the 12-metre class at the 1908 Olympics. Born in Leith, Spence was just one of four non-Merseyside-born crew members of Mouchette. He was a member, and steward, of the Holy Loch Sailing Club at Dunoon.
Spence worked in the insurance business and lived in the Manchester area both before and after World War I. A member of the Manchester Insurance Institute, he was involved in many local activities in Dunham Massey, where he lived, and was chairman of the Parish Council and a warden of the local church. Spence and his wife were keen golfers, and often played together in mixed foursomes.
