Holger Sundström was at the height of his sailing career in the mid-1960s and was to chosen to represent Sweden, alongside Pelle Petterson, in the Star class at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. After a slow start in the first two races, the duo finished 2-1-2-2-4 in the final races, which placed them just shy of the Americans by the end of the tournament and earned them a bronze medal. Sundström and Petterson would again represent Sweden in the Star class at the 1966 European Championships, but finished seventh in a field of 51 boats.
