Biography

Gerald Tait was one of the 10 crew members aboard Thomas Glen-CoatsHera, which won gold in the 12-metre class at the 1908 Olympics. Like all the other members of the crew, Tait was a member of the Royal Clyde Yacht Club, which happened to be the venue for the 12-metre event at the London Games.

Tait was a very experienced yachtsman in his own right and raced may well-known yachts on the Clyde including the cutter Puffin, which he bought in 1908. Tait was a Girvan-based solicitor and partner in the firm Murray & Tait. He held some important positions in the Girvan area including Clerk to the Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire, Procurator-Fiscal and Burgh Prosecutor for Girvan.
