Brescia’s Roby Vencato was an Italian sailor. Accompanied by Roberto Sponza, he was Italian champion in the 470 class in 1971 and 1972. He joined the national team in 1973 and finished 14th at the World Championships that year and was runner-up at the Kingston pre-Olympic regattas in 1975, the year in which he won a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in 470 Class.
At the Montréal Games, after an excellent start in which they won race two, Vencato-Sponza could not hold on and placed 14th. Vencato was team manager of the Italian sailing team at four Olympics from 1980-92.
In the early 1980s, Vencato embarked on a successful business career in the design and construction of sails and, together with his associate Gianni Faiman, became managing director of the Eurosail company in Trieste.
