The 470 class was introduced to the Olympic Program at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, but has become one of the most popular sailing classes and remained on the Olympic Program ever since its introduction. In 1988, the 470 class was separated into men’s and women’s events. The 470 is a two-person monohull dinghy with a centreboard. The name 470 refers to the length of the boat, 4.70 metres. The class was designed in 1963 by Frenchman André Cornu.
This event came down to the final race, which was won by the West German crew of Frank Hübner and Harro Bode, enabling them to move ahead of the Spanish crew of Antonio Gorostegui and Pedro Millet and win the gold medal. Of the medalists, only Gorostegui would ever compete at the Olympics again and this was his only medal.
The Colombian boat finished 22nd, with Beatriz de Lisocky as the crew member. De Lisocky was the only female to compete in sailing at the 1976 Olympics.
