West German sailor Götz von Mirbach was one of the crew in the 6 metres class that finished 10th at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. He was a member of the Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee in Berlin. Von Mirbach participated in the Spanish Civil War as a marine officer, and during World War II was involved in attacking British boats in the English Channel. He engaged in 165 enemy raids with over 70,000 BRT ship space, was responsible for the sinking of several warships, and was promoted to corvette captain. During the war he was awarded the German and the Knight’s Cross, and the Iron Cross I. and II. Class. From May to September 1945 he was a British prisoner of war.
