Gene Walet, Jr. attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, but eventually graduated from Georgetown University in 1922. Walet later earned a law degree from Loyola University of New Orleans in 1927. Walet competed in football, baseball, and basketball at all three colleges. He worked as an executive and lawyer. His son, Gene Walet, III, was on his crew with him at the 1956 Olympics and later competed at the 1960 Olympics. Both Walets sailed out of the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans.
