Swede Whiton graduated from Princeton in 1926 and later did postgraduate work at Harvard and Columbia’s department of geology. He was president of the Union Sulphur & Oil Corp. and was generous in assisting those less well placed financially to take up the sport of sailing. On one occasion he purchased eight boats to endow a series of nautical summer courses.
