Ahead of the 1960 Roma Olympics the Greek sailing crew of Georgios Zaimis, Crown Prince Konstantinos, and Odyssevs Eskitzoglou spent many hours on the Gulf of Faliro, which they claimed had similar characteristics to the Golfo di Napoli, the venue used at the Games. Zaimis and his crewmates sailed in the Dragon event at the Roma Games but started off poorly, finishing in tenth in the first of seven races. Fortunately for them they put together a string of consistent results where they finished no lower than fourth in the final six races. They had guaranteed a medal two races before the end of the competition and went on to win gold by more than 1,000 points. For their performance all three of them shared the award for Greek Athlete of the Year in 1960.
Zaimis returned to the Olympics for the 1964 and 1968 Games but did not replicate his past success. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics the Greek crew finished eighth, while at the Mexico City Games they slipped down to 15th. He later served as the President of the Peiraias Sailing Club.
