Biography

Eileen Wearne was an Australian track and field athlete who specialised as a sprinter. In 1932 Wearne became the national champion in the 100 yards, earning herself a place on the Olympic team. She ran in the 100 metres at the Los Angeles Games but did not advance from the heats. After missing the 1934 British Empire Games and the 1936 Berlin Olympics she competed at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney. The Games were a great success for Wearne, with her winning gold in the 110-220-110 yards relay (with the non-Olympians Decima Norman and Jean Coleman), and an individual bronze in the 220 yards. Before her death in July 2007 she was 95-years-old, making her Australia’s oldest Olympian at the time.

Personal Best: 100 – 12.3 (1932).
