Graham Gipson began displaying promise as a track athlete in his youth at Guildford Grammar School. He won his first and only Australian national title in 1953 in the 440 yards, and was second in the 100 and 220 yards that same year. In 1956 he was selected to represent his country at the Melbourne Olympics, where he won a silver medal in the 4x400 metres alongside Leon Gregory, David Lean, Kevan Gosper, and John Goodman. He was also a reserve with the 4x100 metres relay squad, but did not compete, and, individually, was eliminated in round one of the 200 metres and the quarter-finals of the 400 metres.
In 1957, Gipson reached the national podium in his three main events: second in the 100 yards and the 440 yards and third in the 220 yards. In his final year of active competition, he came in second nationally in the 440 yards.
Personal Bests: 200 – 21.3 (1956); 400 – 47.45 (1956).
