When he was at school Bob Joyce played football before he was encouraged to take up track and field athletics. Joyce joined the Geelong Guild Athletic Club, where he became a promising hopeful in the hurdles when he was the fastest qualifier at the Australian trials for the 1956 Olympics. At his home Games in Melbourne he ran in the 110 metres hurdles but was eliminated in the heats. During his brief athletics career Joyce did have some success, winning several state and national events. His daughter Rebecca was a successful rower who won bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
