Joseph Lynch was a middle-distance runner who frequently medaled at the nationals and New South Wales championships between 1905-10. He was also an actor who performed in both Australia and the United States. In 1914 Lynch joined the Australian Infantry Forces, serving with the 4th Reinforcement of the 1st Australian Infantry Battalion. He fought in Gallipoli and later saw action in Flanders and in July 1916 was wounded in Somme. He returned to Sydney after the war, but never competed in sports again, focusing on the theatre for the remainder of his life.
