Margaret Bell was second on the Canadian high jump list in 1933 and rose to first in 1934, the same year that she first represented her country internationally. At both the 1934 British Empire and Women’s World Games, she took bronze, in the former behind Marjorie Clark of South Africa and another Canadian, Eva Dawes. Bell remained at the top of the Canadian lists for the next two years and became national champion in the high jump in 1936, her only Canadian title. She then took part in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, but finished joint-ninth, and dropped to second on the Canadian lists in 1937.
Bell soon made a comeback, however, and was back at the top of the lists in 1938 and 1939. At the 1938 British Empire Games, she just missed the podium in fourth. She was second on the Canadian high jump list in 1940, after which she retired from active competition.
Personal Best: HJ – 1.60 (1936).
