Vincent Callard

Vincent Callard was born in London and served with the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I. He took up distance running after the conflict and gained minor notability in England for his prowess in the 10,000 metres. In 1925 he moved to North America and settled in Canada, where he joined Toronto’s Monarch Athletic Club to continue his athletic career. This led to his selection for the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, where he was eliminated in the opening round of the 5,000 metres. He was also entered in the 3,000 metres steeplechase, but did not start. For the next nearly 10 years his performances grew more prominent, and he was again selected to represent Canada in 1936 at the Berlin Games, this time in the marathon. He was ultimately dropped and replaced by Percy Wyer, however, who had been mistakenly declared ineligible due to the belief that his entry had not been received on time. Callard’s running days soon wrapped up and, by 1940, he had returned to England, where he eventually died in 1976.
