Canadian long-distance runner Eddie Cotter began competitive running in 1904, amassing a long list of victories during his career. In 1909 Cotter won the Canadian Marathon in a then record time of 2-51:53. That same year he won the Hamilton Marathon, earning him an all expenses paid trip to England to run in the Polytechnic Marathon in London in 1910. His trip to England, however, was in vain as the race was called off following the death of King Edward VII. Cotter also started the marathon at the 1908 London Olympics but failed to finish the course.
