Born in Scotland in 1894 Jack Cuthbert later moved to Canada where he became a noted long-distance runner. Cuthbert competed at the Canadian championships in 1924 where he won the 10 mile event and finished second in the 10,000 metres. His performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1924 Paris Games where he finished 13th in the marathon. He continued to compete in long-distance races over the next few years, including running in the marathon at the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario, but he did not finish the course.
