Jack Harris was born in England in 1902 before he moved to Canada where he became a talented all-round sportsman. At high school Harris was a good track athlete but also played rugby, lacrosse, and soccer. His preferred distance on the track was the 800 metres, which saw him win several championships, including the 1922 Canadian AAU championship ta 880 yards, and selection for the 1924 Paris Olympics where he reached the semi-finals. Harris retired from athletics two years later and became the director of promotions at Osborne Stadium in Winnipeg.
