Len Hutton

Len Hutton was a national athletic star, as well as a rugby and American-style football player, during the 1920s and 1930s and he took his talents international at the turn of the decade when he won the long jump competition at the 1930 British Empire Games. At the same tournament he also captured a bronze medal in the triple jump event. His momentum carried him to the 1932 Summer Olympics as a member of the Canadian track and field delegation, but he was unable to set a mark in his only event, the long jump.

After the Games he focused his athletic career on football and was a member of the Montreal Football Club until the 1940s, during the pre-Canadian Football League era. He continued to compete in track and field from time to time as well, becoming the first Canadian to make the University of Notre Dame’s varsity track and field team, and also played basketball. A lifelong athlete, he was inducted into the Canadian Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame prior to his death in September of 1976.
