Later that year, he ran for the United States at the 1967 Pan American Games, winning a gold medal in the steeplechase in Winnipeg. He competed for Canada several times at the International Cross-Country Championships, and at the inaugural Western Canada Games in 1979, won the steeplechase and 5,000 metres. McCubbins taught school in Winnipeg for over 20 years and coached track during that time at the University of Manitoba.
