Biography

In June 1918 Silas McLellan was drafted at Camp Aldershot, the training facility for 5th Canadian Division of the Canadian Army. A few months later McLellan arrived in Liverpool, England where he served with the 17th reserve battalion before returning to Canada the following June. Once back home he began training in long distance road running under the guidance of fellow runner Victor MacAuley. His first big result came in 1923 when he placed third in the Halifax Herald Modified Marathon before going on to win five editions of the race during his career.

In 1928 McLellan qualified to represent Canada at the Amsterdam Olympics where he finished 26th in the marathon. He then won back-to-back editions of Herald’s full marathon in 1930 and 1931, in addition to finishing ninth at the 1930 Boston Marathon. He also finished sixth in the marathon at the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario. McLellan was one of the original inductees into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame.
