Norman General was a member of the Six Nations of the Grand River, Ontario where he was a noted distance runner who won multiple races in the post-war period. In July 1920 General finished third in a marathon in Hamilton, Ontario that was used as a trial for the upcoming Olympics. He had to fund his own way to Europe to attend the Antwerpen Games, with people of the Reserve and Brant County helping to raise the money for the trip. At the Olympics he ran in the marathon where he placed 22nd out of the 48 athletes who started the race. Once he returned to Canada he continued to compete in long-distance races and won the 12-mile Canadian National Exhibition race in Toronto in 1921. General was later recognised at Prominence Point, a “walk of fame” in the city of Brantford to honour outstanding achievements of citizens of the town.
