Ain Roost was born in Sweden to parents who left Estonia after the Russian occupation. When he was five years old, the family moved to Canada. In 1965, Roost went to Utah State University on a track scholarship, where he worked with former discus world record holder Jay Silvester, eventually graduating in 1968. Roost first competed internationally at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games when he finished seventh in the discus. In addition to his two Olympic appearances, he finished eighth at the 1967 Pan American Games, fourth at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games, won bronze at the 1971 Pan American Games, and finished fifth at the 1975 Pan American Games. Roost returned to Utah State in 1970 to get a Master’s Degree and later received a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1975. He eventually settled in San Diego where he spent his career as a clinical psychologist.
