Zhang Zaojiu was a race walker from Shanghai, a stronghold of the sport in pre-World War II China. In 1935, when race walking appeared on the program of the national athletics championships he placed second behind Cai Zhengyi. However, of five entrants only two finished the race. During the long trip to the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Chang supposedly entertained the team by playing the mandolin.
