Cai Zhengyi was a race walker from Shanghai. The city was a stronghold of race walking and saw the foundation of a race walking federation, one of the first organized sports federations in pre-World War II China. In 1935, race walking appeared on the program of the national championships and Cai Zhengyi became the first champion in a 50 km race with five participants, of which only two finished the race. China sent a strong team of four race walkers to the 1936 Berlin Olympics of which three actually competed with Cai Zhengyi ranking 21st, the highest of the Chinese team.
