José Barrientos was a Cuban sprinter who was the flagbearer for his country at the Opening Ceremony of the 1928 Amsterdam Games. At the Games Barrientos ran in the 100 metres where he reached the quarter-finals. He was also scheduled to run in the 200 metres but did not start the race. In September 1945 Barrientos was killed in an aviation accident. He was 41-years-old. The following year the Barrientos Memorial track and field meeting was established in Cuba, which often served as the Cuban Athletics Championships.
