During the 1970s Cuban track and field athlete Leandro Civil specialised in middle-distance running, winning multiple medals in the 800 metres. In 1971 Civil won silver in the event at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics in Jamaicia, before winning gold two years later in Venezuela. He had similar success at the Central American and Caribbean Games; winning gold in 1974 in the Dominican Republic, followed by a bronze in 1978 in Colombia. At the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico, Civil won silver, finishing just behind his teammate Luis Medina. The following year Civil ran in the 800 metres at the Montréal Olympics where he reached the semi-finals. After his competitive career he became a coach, working with several noted Cuban athletes including Roberto Hernández and Ana Fidelia Quirós.
