Biography

After becoming a multiple champion in sprint events in Denmark Gunnar Christensen also became the national champion in the hammer throw. Christensen represented AIK 95 in København and won his first medal at the national championships in 1932, with bronze in the 400 metres. After winning silver in the same event in 1934 he then won gold in the 200 metres, 400 metres, and the pentathlon in 1936. His performances earned him selection for the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he ran in the 200 and 400 metres, reaching the quarter-finals of the latter. After the Olympics Christensen became the Danish champion in the 400 metres (1937, 1939–41) and the 200 metres (1940–41). In 1942 his focus shifted to the field events, with him winning silver in the long jump (1942, 1943) and bronze in the shot put (1943). In 1946 Christensen had become the Danish champion in the hammer throw and went on to win silver at the national championships in 1948 and 1949.
