Danish all-round track and field athlete Ernst Larsen specialised in the pole vault and won multiple national titles. Larsen won his first medal in the event at the Danish championships with bronze in 1927. After a silver in 1928, and another bronze in 1931, he won his first national title in 1932. He went on to win eight further Danish titles in the event (1933–39, 1941), along with two titles in the decathlon (1933, 1936), and one in the high jump (1938). Larsen was scheduled to compete in the pole vault at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics but did not start. He eventually competed at the Olympics at the 1936 Berlin Games where he tied for 17th in the pole vault with six other athletes who all had a best clearance of 3.80 metres.
