Ezz El-Din Moukhtar

A career military man, Ezz El-Din Moukhtar earned a Bachelor of Military Sciences in 1944 and was appointed a Lieutenant in the Egyptian Army that same year. From 1938 onwards he was active as a track and field athlete, an interest that culminated with his selection to represent Egypt in two events at the 1948 London Olympics. In London, he was eliminated in round one of the 100 metres and placed 28th in the decathlon. Although this was his only Olympic appearance, he did not retire from active competition until 1956.

Moukhtar began rising in the military ranks rapidly after the 1952 Egyptian Revolution. He joined military intelligence in 1956 and earned a masters’ degree in 1958. He was the official military spokesman during the 1973 October War and served in several political positions, culminating in his role as Secretary General of Presidency of the Republic from 1980 through 1982. He also remained active in sport, serving on the Egyptian Olympic Committee from 1959 through 1966.
