He won another Finnish title in the event in 1930, along with winning three consecutive team cross-country titles from 1928 to 1930. In 1932 he won the marathon at the Finnish Olympic trials earning him a place at the Los Angeles Games. Toivonen was considered one of the favourites to win the marathon in Los Angeles, with him ultimately winning bronze. Two years later he won gold in the marathon at the 1934 European Athletics Championships in Torino. Toivonen wanted to compete at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but he suffered a calf injury in a training session, which ruled him out of the national qualifiers.
