Biography

Finnish track and field athlete Hannes Torpo represented Porin Tarmo and specialised in the shot put and discus throw, winning multiple medals at the national athletics championships. Torpo won his only gold at the Finnish championships in 1923 with victory in the two-handed shot put, which used the combined distances from throws using both the left and right hands. He won silver in the shot put (1922–24), two-handed shot put (1924), and the discus (1926), as well as bronze in the shot put (1926, 1929–30), two-handed shot put (1922), and the discus (1924, 1927, 1929). Torpo competed in the shot put at the 1924 Paris Olympics where he narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth with a best effort of 14.450 metres.
