A lifelong resident of Rennes, Jean Schlegel had a brief international track athletics career with the French national team from 1950 through 1952. During this time, the most significant of his seven international appearances came at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he was eliminated in round one of the 5,000 metres. Domestically, he was third in the 1,500 metres in 1950 (behind Patrick El Mabrouk and Jean Vernier), second in the 5,000 metres in 1951 (behind Alain Mimoun), and third in the 5,000 metres in 1952 (behind Mimoun and Ben Ahmed Abdelkrim). He retired from active competition at the end of 1952.
