A playmaker with Ginnastica Triestina in his youth, Gianfranco Pieri won two Junior Italian titles (1953-54). He then moved up to the Trieste first team and played in the First League of Italian basketball. From 1956-68 he played for Olimpia Milano where he won nine Italian titles (1957-1960, 1962-63, 1965-67). He also won the European Cup in 1966. Pieri scored a total of 3,152 points in 291 matches. He ended his career in 1970, after two seasons with Splugen Brau of Gorizia.
Pieri was only 19 when he made his international début against Sweden in 1956. He won a silver medal at the first summer Universiade at Torino in 1959, and went on to compete in two Olympics, Roma 1960 and Tokyo 1964. Pieri won 61 international caps and scored 524 points. In 2007 he was inducted into the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame.
