Biography

Constance Willoughby started her athletics carer as a sprinter and hurdler before concentrating on the long jump. A Central London bank clerk by profession, she had a busy year in 1952. She married Highgate Harriers’ sprinter Derek Willoughby in March, and then finished second to Shirley Cawley in the WAAA long jump. That performance gained her selection for the Helsinki Olympics, where she was placed 19th after jumping 27cm below her PB, set at the Glasgow Police Sports just two weeks before setting off for Helsinki. Her athletics career was placed on hold in 1953 when Willoughby gave birth to a son, Christopher.
