After winning the long jump at the 1937 Oxbridge Sports, Harold Askew placed third in 1938 and second in 1939. In 1939 he also won the UAU title, placed second at the AAA Championships, and was the winner of the Oxford/Cambridge vs. Harvard/Yale meet with 23-10½ (7.28), all four of his jumps being over 23-0 (7.01). The major part of his international career came after World War II and in 1949, after an interval of 10 years, he improved his personal best by half-an-inch. After placing third in three post-war AAA Championships (1946-47, 49), he won the title in 1950.
