Willie Steele was the best long jumper of the post-War years and was favored in 1948. He had won the 1946-47 AAU title and the 1948 Olympic Trials. At the trials he had a near foul on a jump of 8.17 (26-9¾), which would have bettered Jesse Owens’ world record. In London, Steele had an injured ankle and took only two jumps. But both were good enough to win the gold medal. The fifth-place finisher was Adegboyega, Prince Adedoyin who was Nigerian, but represented Great Britain as Nigeria did not yet have a recognized National Olympic Committee.
