Biography

Denis Carey was an exceptional all-round athlete who was the cousin of John Flanagan, the world champion hammer thrower. Carey himself won the hammer at the AAA Championships in 1893, placed third in the pole vault in 1897, and was a finalist in the 120y hurdles in 1902. At home he won the Irish AAA hammer title six times (1892-3, 1907, 1910, 1913-14), the 120y hurdles five times (1898-1901, 1905), and the pole vault in 1893. Carey placed sixth in the hammer at the 1912 Olympic Games when just three weeks short of his 40th birthday and in 1920, at the age of 47, he placed third in both the hammer and the 56-lb. weight at the AAA Championships. His remarkable career lasted more than 30 years.
