As a specialist in the weight events, Tom Nicolson compiled an incomparable record in the annals of Scottish athletics. He won the hammer at the Scottish Championships for 19 successive years (9012-24) and was the winner of the shot 14 times (1902-05, 1909-23). He also won the 56-lb. weight four times (1921-24) and the Scots-style hammer three times (1921-23) for a total of 40 championships. At the AAA Championships he won the hammer six times (1903-05, 1907, 1909, 1912) and he also won the shot in 1903. His working life was spent on the family farm in Kyles of Bute on the Clyde.
