After a dead-heat with Alan Patterson in the final of the 440 y at the 1909 AAA Championships, Lionel Reed lost the run-off but was an outright winner of the title in 1910. He also placed second in the AAA 220 y in 1908. He was the Essex champion at 100 y (1909, 1911) and 440 y (1909-11). He worked as a civil servant with the Board of Trade.
