East German race walker Kurt Sakowski participated with the mixed German team in the 1960 and 1964 Olympics over 50 km, finishing eighth in Tokyo, after being disqualified in Roma. In Tokyo he came in only as the third-best German race walker behind Burkhard Leuschke (4th) and Christoph Höhne (6th). At the 1966 Europeans Sakowski placed fourth. He won national titles at 50 km in 1953 and 20 km in 1957, adding several podiums in different distances. Sakowski was first trained as a bricklayer, but later worked as a technical draftsman.
