At the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games East German sprinter Frank Schaffer won a silver medal with the 4x400 relay, adding a bronze medal in the individual 400. At the World Cup one year earlier he came in fifth in the 400 and sixth with the relay. In 1979 and 1980 he won East German titles in the 400 and in 1977 and 1978 with the relay. He was trained as a machine maintenance worker.
