Hans Gruber was a bank official. He played football for Duisburg SpV, standing in the shade of players like Ludwig Leinberger and Hans Kalb, which also explains that he played in only one international match. In 1928 Gruber was surprisingly appointed to the German squad for the Olympic football tournament, but did not play in Amsterdam. His only international game came in 1929 in Berlin, drawing 1-1 with the Scottish national team. Gruber later was active in Duisburg as a Game Committee chairman.
