Conny Heidkamp began his football career at Düsseldorfer SC 99. His first appointment with the national team was against the Netherlands in 1927. In 1928 the defender moved to Bayern München. The “Grenadier,” as he was later called, experienced the highlights of his career in the following years in München. In a short time the reliable defender captained his team to their first German Championship in 1932 in Nürnberg with a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Heidkamp earned nine international caps and scored one goal.
Heidkamp was a clerk by profession, but also coached the teams of BC Augsburg (1937-39) and FC Bayern München (1943-45). His son Konrad Heidkamp, Jr. became a renowned journalist, music and literature critic, among others for the tageszeitung (taz), Die Zeit, the North German Radio (NDR) and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ).
