Claudia Steger, a 400 metre runner, came in fifth with the 4x400 relay at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. In 1989 she married hurdler and non-Olympian Wolfgang Richter. Steger started with limited success at the 1978 and the 1982 European Championships, the 1981 European Cup, and the 1982 European Indoors.

Steger collected several German Youth Championships. In 1981 she was West German Champion with the 4x200 indoor relay and outdoors in the 200 and with both relays (4x100 and 4x400). She then added three more relay titles (1982 4x400, 1983 4x200 indoor, and 1984 4x100). Her daughter Malena Richter became a hurdler. Her father Max was a coaching legend with her home club TSV Göggingen, working for more than 57 years as a coach, and also coached for the Bavarian and the German Athletics Association.
