Khyalmar Teravayn was born in the then Finnish governorate of Viipuri (now Vyborg) but attended school in St. Petersburg. In 1915, he graduated with honours from the economics department of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute. For many years, he headed the Athletes’ Club of his university and served on the committee of the Petrograd Student League. No additional records of his clubs are available. He was team manager and an unused reserve as a forward at the 1912 Olympic Games.
After the Russian Revolution, he settled in Helsinki and worked as a diplomatic courier. In 1927, he was one of co-owners of the company OY Sarli Limited.
